Nova Scotia child attacked by three dogs has died, school officials say

HALIFAX, N.S. — A 13-year-old student has died following a dog attack in southwest Nova Scotia, a loss that has sent shockwaves through the local community and school system.

Education officials with the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education confirmed the death of the Grade 8 student and said counselling and psychological supports have been deployed at Shelburne Regional High School and surrounding schools. Additional resources remain on standby as students, staff, and families grapple with the tragedy.

“This is a profound loss for our entire community,” said executive director Jared Purdy in a statement, adding that the centre will continue to assess and respond to the needs of those affected.

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Shelburne, Penny Smith, confirmed the child’s age and said the municipality will not comment further while the investigation continues. She urged residents to keep the family and classmates of the victim in their thoughts.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the incident occurred Saturday on Upper Sandy Cove Road in the Welshtown area as the youth was riding a bicycle. Police said three large-breed dogs attacked the child, who was later airlifted to Halifax with life-threatening injuries. The dogs were subsequently euthanized.

RCMP confirmed Tuesday that the investigation remains active. No additional details have been released, and no charges have been laid at this time.

Fifth Pillar Media Group will continue to follow this story and report verified updates as they become available.
